Slovenia: Slovenske zeleznice hopes linking project to succeed

September 2007.

The management of Slovenske zeleznice hopes that the project of linking up the railway company, port operator Luka Koper and logistics company Intereuropa with German rail operator Deutsche Bahn will succeed.

"It would be nice if Slovenske zeleznice was competitive as an independent company, but it won't be," general manager Peter Puhan said.

Representatives of Deutsche Bahn were in Slovenia this week. Puhan, who said he did not meet them this time, explained that they were establishing the state of the infrastructure in passenger and cargo traffic.

"As far as I have been informed, they are amazed that we are so good with such poor infrastructure...they are stressing that the increasingly acute bottlenecks need to be eliminated", he said, adding that there had been one high-level meeting with Detusche Bahn and two technical meetings at which the Slovenian companies presented data and projections on the basis of which valuations of the companies would be carried out.

Puhan said that the main advantages of Slovenske zeleznice are the country's strategic position and links with the
Port of Koper, but he was quick to point out that the company was setting no restrictions on cooperation.
