Poland: RZD and DB want to buy PKP Cargo

October 2007.

According to Polish Press Agency (PAP) Vladimir Yakunin, chairman of Russian Railways has informed that RZD and DB would like to buy a Polish railway company. PAP has written that it had been PKP Cargo.

PAP didn't write why this "Polish railway company" should be understood as the biggest Polish railway operator - state-owned PKP Cargo SA.

Yakunin said that two companies had submitted a bid for a Polish railway company, but he didn't want to give any details which company it was.

Asked why Russian Railways intend to own a Polish company, he said: "We do it as we want Polish citizens like us even more. We want to develop brotherly relations with this nation".

Jacek Wnukowski, spokeperson of PKP Cargo said that he knew nothing about RZD's buy of PKP Cargo as there was no tender held for it. He didn't want to comment Yakunin's words.

Michał Wrzosek from PKP SA (PKP Cargo's mother company) said that there were no talks held with DB or RZD on possible selling of PKP Cargo. He added that PKP SA does not hold any tender for selling neither PKP Cargo nor any other railway operator from the PKP Group.
