Bulgaria: EUR 580m for railways

Bulgarian Transport Minister Petar Moutafchiev, Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski and the head of the European Commission in Bulgaria, Michael Humphreys, showcased the projects that have been green-lighted for funding under Bulgaria’s Transport operational programme.

Major projects will include the deployment of a geographic information system which will serve the needs of the national company Railway Infrastructure. Spending on railway transportation under the programme are said to be EUR 580m, or 28.95 per cent of the total funds of the national plan. Railway projects to be given priority include the improvement of parallel rails that are part of the tran-European corridors. Among railway sections to be repaired are the Vidin-Sofia, Svilengrad to the Turkish border, Sofia-Plovdiv and Sofia-Radomir sections.
