Belarus, Lithuania to Increase Railway Cargo Hauls

Belarus and Lithuania intend to increase the amount of railway cargo hauls. The Lithuanian Railways is one of the most important partners for the Belarusian Railways, said Vladimir Drazhin, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Lithuania.

Vladimir Drazhin noted that the Lithuanian Railways account for a considerable volume in the international cargo hauls via
Belarus. In 2007, it totaled 21% in exports, 3% - in imports, 18% - in transit, BelTA reports.

The protocol on cooperation between the Belarusian and Lithuanian Railways signed in
Minsk envisages measures to increase cargo hauls between the two countries and improve the car traffic volume capacity. The two sides agreed upon the information exchange as well.

In 2007,
Belarus transported to Lithuania 7.3 million tonnes of cargo (38% to 2006) – chemical and mineral fertilizers, construction cargoes, oil and oil products. Belarus brought in 414 thousand tonnes of cargo from Lithuania (58%) including sugar, hardware, oilcake. In 2007, cargo transit from/to Lithuania via Belarus reached 9.2 million tonnes, or 35.9% to 2006.

In 2007, the container train Viking joint project along Ilichevsk-Kolyadichi-Klaipeda grew its hauls 39% as against 2006 and reached 44748 containers in TEU.
