Railroad to Link Pak to Europe via Iran

The first railway route linking Islamabad to Istanbul through Iran and moving on to Europe will be launched by the end of next year.

Iran will hopefully finish construction of Bam-Zahedan railroad by the end of the current year (March 2009). Once completed, Iran's railroad will be connected to Pakistan's," Hamid Behbahani, Iran's Deputy Minister of Roads and Transportation told Fars news agency.

He added that
Iran is ready to connect the Chabahar Free Zone in southeast of the country to the city of Zahedan via railroad in cooperation with India.

The construction of the railroad between Khaf in northeastern
Iran and Herrat in western Afghanistan is progressing, he said, adding 60 percent of the Iranian side and 40 percent of the Afghan's side are completed.

Upon completion of the project,
Afghanistan will have a railroad link to Europe via Iran
