Ukraine: Kiev wants to bring trains back to Moldova and Transnistria

June 2008.

Ukraine declared interest in bringing back train connections between Moldova and Tiraspol, the capital and administrative center of the separatist Transnistrian region, and the second largest city in Moldova. The routes discussed include sections via Kamianets-Podilskyi as well as reviving the routes via Transnistria, Kishinev, Odessa as well as modernising the sections in Danube delta. To achieve that we need to find agreement between Moldova and Tiraspol - Ukrainian ambassador in Kishiniev said. The rail transport via Moldova and Transnistria was closed on March 2006 when the Moldova railays (CFM) launched connections on Northern routes, via Kamianets-Podilskyi, ommiting transnistria. Moldova said it was to dangerous to operate trains on the mutinous territory.
