June 2008.

Railway freight transportation increased by 5% to 552mn tons in the CIS and Baltic countries in the first three months of 2008, RZD has reported.

The largest increase was ensured by freight transportation in Lithuania (rise of 41.6%), Georgia (31.4%), Estonia (25.4%), Moldova (24.4%), Kazakhstan (10.2%). Belarus (8.8%), and Uzbekistan (7.3%) in the accounting period. Volumes of coke transportation advanced by 10.2%, of coal - by 8.9%, of cement - by 5.2%, of ferrous metals - by 2.5%, of building materials - by 8.4%, of agricultural machinery - by 40.8%, of industrial raw materials - by 12.8%, of equipment and machinery - by 13%, and of cargo in containers - by 8%. The average daily containers loading increased by 1.8% to 5,200 units. Railway freight transportation went up by 3.3% to 2.2bn tons in the CIS countries in 2007.
