Process of PKP Cargo Privatisation Begins

November 2008.

Poland's Infrastructure Ministry has given the necessary approval for the privatisation of PKP Cargo the freight division of the state-owned rail group, PKP.
The press spokesperson of PKP has now stated that within the next few weeks, the timetable for the company's privatisation will be finalised, and following that, a tender will be called for a privatisation advisor. It is expected that in the first instance, only a minority stake in PKP Cargo will be put on to the market. Previously, the EBRD had wanted to participate in the process of privatising PKP Cargo, and placed an offer for a 25% stake in the company in 2005. However, the government at the time decided not to take up the offer. Certain analysts believe that it would have been better to start PKP Cargo's privatisation process much earlier, as it is now facing net losses for the first time in its history, Logistics Finland reports.
